IT Solutions and Telecommunications

Veritech started out with a focus on turn-key IT solutions and telecommunication services. Our IT solutions were primarily targeting the development, deployment and management of large-scale databases such as population registers, passport systems, voters’ registers, births and deaths registers, etc.

The technologies that Veritech specialized in were data collection and reporting systems, automated fingerprint, iris and facial recognition systems, ID card production, datacenter deployments, database development and project management. Geographically, the focus was the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. Veritech technicians and experts also consulted for the UNDP on electoral projects especially.

To provide telephony and internet services in South Africa, Veritech acquired 2 licenses from ICASA in 2014:

  • The Individual Electronic Communications Service (IECS) license, which enables Veritech to provide electronic communications services to customers over its own or via another company’s network. It is also used for providing services such as Internet access, email and virtual private networks.
  • An Individual Electronic Communications Network Service (IECNS) license allows Veritech to deploy and operate a physical network across a province or the entire country.

Satellite Broadband Rollout & SME Empowerment

Veritech introduced a micro-telco incubator for the training, development, and support of resellers who had signed up to roll out Veritech’s supply of satellite broadband to over 2,000 small and medium-sized enterprises. The programme was deployed in some of the remotest parts of South Africa, benefiting SMEs working in a number of key sectors including retail and agriculture. Delivery of resilient broadband connectivity underpins South Africa’s business growth strategy. Research demonstrates that SMEs are the building blocks of an economy.

The satellite broadband initiative revealed the acute need for Managed IT Services amongst small and medium-sized enterprises.

Managed IT Services

Bundles of Managed IT Services were packaged and priced for the SME market as we rolled out satellite broadband connectivity. Such bundling required a careful evaluation of our business vision and technical strengths, plus a clear view and perspective about current and future industry trends. Given our history and strengths, we leaned towards bundles that included infrastructure, data collection, data warehousing, data management, disaster recovery, network administration and business process automation. Ongoing support and device management were then overlaid on these.

Like most MSPs, Veritech started with a tiered bundling model, where the tiers were structured to provide several levels of packages with varying price points based on the scale of the services provided. Typically, a Veritech customer could get a cheap starter or “Bronze” package with basic services, followed by a costlier intermediate “Silver” package with standard services. The costliest offering was the “Gold Tier” with an advanced set of services.

Refining Our Pricing Model and Building Our Software Stack

Veritech became much more flexible in how it took its managed services to market. The tier model had its drawbacks. Regulating the levels of service for each customer became a cumbersome process, especially as the number of clients we were servicing grew. In addition, our customers increasingly found it difficult to compare multiple offerings — not only at the initial subscription stage but also when considering package upgrades.

Since 2020, Veritech has adopted a combination of all-you-can-eat pricing, break-fix pricing, per-device pricing, and per-user pricing. We arrived at this model by listening very carefully to our customers.

Building a software stack to power our MSP business was both exciting and challenging. With so many solutions available to deliver each service we offer, choosing the right ones for Veritech was no easy task. Our core stack comprises:

  • Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) software – Automates essential tasks on the client side and allows us to resolve many issues remotely, reducing the need for on-site visits.
  • Professional Services Automation (PSA) tools – Boost productivity through better client management, fewer errors, and automated billing and reporting. Our PSA tools are fully integrated with our ticketing system.
  • Backup and recovery systems – Robust, field-tested, and regularly reviewed to ensure resilience and data protection.
